The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is the first Indian institute to claim a spot in the 201-250 band, inching closer to the top 200. A record 31 Indian institutes have found a place in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17, including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, which has found a place in the top 400.
Times Higher Education does not assign a particular ranking to institutes but sorts them into groups of 50. The University of Oxford, UK topped the overall list.
