A report released by CIS (Centre for Internet and Society.) analyzed 4 government databases, belonging to National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP)’s dashboard and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA)’s portal.
During our research, we encountered numerous instances of publicly available Aadhaar Numbers along with other PII of individuals on government websites. In this paper, we highlight four government projects run by various government departments with publicly available financial data and Aadhaar numbers.
We found sensitive and personal data and information very easily accessible on these portals. Amber Sinha and Srinivas Kodali of CIS.
Given that Aadhaar is linked to a whole lot of personal / financial information, this could lead to an extremely chaotic situation which the government we can tell you won’t take the responsibility of.
“Financial fraudsters could potentially link their phone numbers to Aadhaar numbers and also update it in the bank using individuals Aadhaar information and deprive the individual of their benefits from the state. It has been reported that brokers do buy tons of copies of Aadhaar documents from shops selling SIM cards and other institutions, for the purposes of identity fraud”, from the report.
