Aakashvaani Now on Your Android Phone & Youtube

AakashvaniFinally, the elephant is up for a dance. All India Radio, the gigantic government radio network, largely perceived to be on the path downhill, is taking baby steps in the Internet era.

On Tuesday, the radio broadcaster launched live Internet streaming of its Urdu service & FM Gold on Youtube and an Android App for its news service.

The Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tiwari launched these services in Delhi.

Coming from the 83 year organization much criticized for its bureaucratic setup, this is big. Cash strapped All India Radio is often criticized for its declining popularity, lack of fresh and relevant content and bureaucratic setup.

Of late, the government has gotten serious about granting financial autonomy to All India Radio which has nearly 326 stations across the country. At present, the broadcaster, one of the largest radio networks in the world, is mostly funded by the Information and Broadcasting ministry.

AIR News Android App

The Android app is quite neat with audio and text based news content. The audio segment contains main news segments including Samachar Prabhat, Dopahar Samachar and Samachaar Sandhya as well as the news bulletins and special programs. Its even go the language bulletins.

The app is only for the news channel. The Android app, may not be a great help for a majority of AIR’s listeners who live in rural areas where smartphones are rare and data connectivity is pathetic. However, it may get the broadcaster a few new listeners. Download the Android app here.
