Bharti Airtel has made Facebook’s mobile site free for its 130 million plus customers, and unlike Videocon and Reliance (offers free access to 0.facebook, lighter version of FB) the access is for the m.facebook.com site.

The scheme is available on Airtel for 2 months until August 31^st, 2010 and Facebook’s mobile site will be available in English and Hindi; five more Indian languages – Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam.

For the 2-month period, the partnership enables Airtel customers to access Facebook’s full mobile site and at no data cost from their Airtel mobiles via m.facebook.com.

Airtel customers who are Facebook users will be able to post status updates, comment and write on walls, message others (support for in five vernacular languages) , and also be able to view or upload photos – all without any data charges!

For existing mobile internet customers on Airtel, there is no need to do anything – they can immediately start connecting with their friends by visiting the Facebook mobile site.

Customers who are accessing the mobile internet for the first time need to simply SMS ‘FACEBOOK’ to 54321 to take advantage of this special offer.  Free access to Facebook Mobile on Airtel is available for the entire months of July and August, 2010.

Great move and Orkut should now start digging its graveyard [Read: Orkut Losing to Facebook in India], if they haven’t started so.

The big deal about such partnerships is to start the ‘habit’ of data consumption – once you are hooked on to this, you will automatically subscribe to the GPRS pack and hopefully, aid in improving the ARPU of telecom operators.
