Today technology plays a significant role in the way we travel, all the way from planning the itinerary and during the travel. According to a recent global survey, 69% of the respondents booked their travel through a website and 20% used a kiosk for check-in on the day of travel.
Today around 60% of airlines offer check-in and ticket booking via mobiles, a significant jump since 2010 and by 2016, almost all airlines (9 out of 10) will offer this functionality, the Passenger IT Trend Survey by SITA said.
Inspite of these technological developments, 70% passengers are yet to be fully convinced of the benefits of using their mobile for commercial activities for travel, while only 36% of passengers would definitely use mobile check-in.
A majority of passengers (78%) say that usability concerns and limitations of the device are the main reason for not using mobile for a particular aspect of travel.
Most travel apps are replicas of the online versions and in some cases are merely scaled down versions of their online websites. Companies are yet to take full advantage of the mobile platform to make the experience using mobile apps worthwhile.
About 88% of passengers surveyed said they would search for availability on mobiles devices, but prefer to make the purchase via a desktop PC.
Even for non transactional procedures like check-in, mobile phones are yet to be a prefered device. Nearly 73% of passengers said that they would definitely use a PC to check-in, while less than half that figure (36%) indicated they would definitely use mobile for the same.
The survey was conducted between April-May 2013 at 6 major international airports representing key world regions. These include Abu Dhabi International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, Frankfurt Airport, Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and GRU Airport.
