Airtel is apparently planning to launch low-cost 4G handsets alongside the broader roll-out of 4G data services in India and to take on Reliance Jio.
The company is in advanced stages to finalize vendors to build 4G handsets in the price range of Rs 4,000 – Rs 12,000 according to a PTI report.
Current negotiations are around whether the handsets should be Airtel branded or co-branded.
Foxconn, who’s manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh recently went online, is apparently one among the vendors Airtel has engaged in talks with.
The devices may not be locked to Airtel networks, but might come bundled with long-term data plans. They will support both FDD and TDD LTE networks.
As Airtel begins to launch its 4G services across the country in a phased manner, the report suggests that the company’s 4G devices could be launched during the festive season of Diwali.
