“Don’t worry Poornima…I’ll make sure Varun is back on track.” These are the words that keep resonating time and again in the book ‘How I braved Anu Aunty and co-founded a million dollar company’ written by Varun Agarwal, the co-founder of Alma Mater. And thank heavens he never came on track otherwise schools, colleges and corporates would have been deprived of their favourite hooded Alma Matter merchandise.
The same company started by the now 26 year old Varun in 2009, has secured investment from Indian Angel Network for an undisclosed amount. Having served 500+ organisations and grown from a two man team Alma Mater has now risen to 15+ employees and two offices. Their primary offerings are: Customized merchandise for colleges, schools & corporates and online memorabilia store for colleges and schools.
The investment was lead by IAN investors Ravindra Krishnappa, Joe Fernandes, Rajiv Mehta and Deependra Moitra. Ravi and Joe will now join the Alma Mater board.
Alma Mater’s focus is to establish itself as the go-to brand in the customised merchandise space which to date remains highly fragmented and dependent on local players. And the investment will take the goal forward. It will be used aggressively for marketing, infrastructure and hiring. They plan to improve their technology focus to be able to operate on a bigger scale.
This is IAN’s 11th investment in this year the last two being prettysecrets.com, an online lingerie brand and Poncho, a Mexican food speciality quick service restaurant based out of Mumbai.
