E-commerce giant Amazon which recently said it will expand its Amazon Android App store to sell in 200 countries is a long way behind Google’s play store. Going by the estimates by Distimo, an app analytics company, Amazon’s app store is at least 10 times smaller than Google’s play store.
“Roughly speaking, Google play is more than ten times bigger than Amazon Appstore in the US,” the latest report by Distimo said. Fruit Ninja Free, for instance, is ranked #9 in Amazon appstore and was downloaded 9.1 times less than in Google Play. it had 2.3 mn device installs in Google Play and 250k downloads in Amazon Appstore in March.
The Amazon appstore competes aggressively with Google play when it comes to top 1000 paid applications: the number of paid downloads is roughly twice the size in Google Play.
The new paid application Temple Run: Oz by Disney is ranked #5 on Amazon and was downloaded 3.4 times less in Amazon Appstore than in Google Play.
Distimo estimates that the top 200 free applications on Amazon had 16 million downloads in total. Most downloaded applications were games.
Top 10 free apps on Amazon Appstore in the US
Top 200 paid applications had 1.6 mn downloads and made $3 mn on One -off revenues.
The top 200 paid applications in Google Play in the US made $5.2 mn in March 2013. This makes Google Play 1.7 times bigger than Amazon Appstore.
