Amazon signs-up local kirana stores to boost last mile connectivity

After acquiring an indirect stake in Future Retail, Amazon is planning to tap traditional retail channels and get them to sell products online under the “I Have Space” program.

The company is signing up small retail mobile shops followed by kirana stores and other merchants. As of now, Amazon has signed up around 20,000 such merchants from 350 cities. It has also tied up with a Bengaluru based startup ShopX, which works as a point of contact between shopkeepers and FMCG companies.

Earlier, Walmart owned Flipkart initiated a similar project. It has partnered with 800 small mobile shops in Telangana and aims to sign-up 15,000 such small vendors.
