APAC region sees 2.6 % decline in overall PC shipment, China dips for first time: Gartner

Total shipment of personal computers in Asia Pacific region was around 30.3 million units in the second quarter of 2012, a 2.6 percent decline compared with the same quarter during 2011, according to a Gartner report. For the first time, China witnessed the negative growth with nearly 5.4 % fall in overall PC shipment.

Countries like Singapore saw the biggest decline in PC shipment with significant 21.5 %, followed by Korea with 11.9 %, Australia 9.2 %. Hong Kong experienced lowest decline with 1.4 %. On the other hand, countries like India and Malaysia had experienced strong growth of 17 percent and 21.6 percent respectively, primarily led by mobile PC growth. The report reflects decline in both mobile PC as well as desk based PC shipment segments, mobile PC witnessed 3.7 % decline whereas desk based PC reported 1.7 % fall. Additionally, professional segment declined for the second time this year, down 8 percent in the quarter. The consumer segment managed to show better results but only grew only 3 percent in comparison to the same quarter in 2011.

According to a report released by IDC on Indian PC market in May, India saw shipment of 2.63 million units in Q 1 2012, representing a sequential gain of 7.7% over the previous quarter while the year-on-year growth was noted to be at 3.5%. As per IDC Asia/Pacific Quarterly PC Tracker, Lenovo topped the PC shipment segment with rise of its market share in the overall notebook segment to 21.2 % in Q1 2012 .

Lenovo maintains the top position in overall PC shipment with increasing 12.6 % year-on-year of its market share in APAC region, followed by Acer, Dell and HP. Meanwhile, HP and Dell seemed to be worst hit as they witnessed decline of 18.9 % and 16.2 % in their shipment respectively. At the same time, ASUS gained the market share of PC  shipment in region with gain of 24.8 %.

The Gartner report points out that emergences of alternative devices, higher rate of PC penetration along with slow down of economies guided the decline of PC shipment in matured markets such as Australia and China. It is worth noting that report does not include media tablet shipments.

Recently introduced Ultrabooks are not doing well in Asia Pacific region, according to the report; consumers did not proactively seek them out in their purchases, which is likely to be the result of prices remaining high throughout this period.
