Apple Inc on Wednesday announced the launch of iPhone 5, its latest in the phenomenally successful phone series. At 112 grams, the phone is 20 % lighter than the previous version, the iPhone 4s.

At the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, the company announced its most anticipated launch of the year. This is the company’s newest launch after its iconic CEO Steve Jobs died of cancer last year.

The phone has an ARM based quad core chip dubbed the A6 which is two times faster than the previous version and 22 % smaller. It has an 8 megapixel camera which clicks photographs at 2364×2448 resolution.

The phone’s battery lasts 225 hours on standby and gives 8 hours of 3G talktime. iPhone 5 also has a new smaller dock connector and third party device makers are said to be working on docking stations already.

Apple Inc, founded by Steve- Jobs and Wozniak, in 1977 is one of the most valuable technology companies of the world with $ 108 bn in revenues in 2011.

At the time of writing, Apple Inc is yet to announce the new devices launch in India. Apple products are usually launched much later in India than they are launched in other markets. According to the Apple store in India, the iPhone 5 is still “coming soon.”

Note: So far at Pi, we have not been covering gadgets with the messianic zealĀ  of gadget sites. However, this being one of the most anticipated launches in the tech world, we thought it would be a good idea to cover it. Full live blog can be found at Mashable.com.
