Very recently, Blackberry launched BBM across all the platforms and data collected by Distimo suggests that BBM has actually gotten more downloads than WhatsApp in India and UK.
“WhatsApp has clearly started fading in affluent markets like USA and UK, where competition for the teen market is heating up rapidly. For BBM, getting within two percentage points of WhatsApp in both India and South Africa during November is little short of a triumph.” [source]
Is comparing download percentage the right metric? WhatsApp already has an established userbase while Blackberry started from zero – it’s quite okay to have lesser download percentage. The important metric however is the actual usage – i.e. number of active users and number of messages being shared in different platforms.
A case of vanity metric, this is?
