Russian Startup Bitrix24 brings social intranet at affordable pricing [+Deal for Pi Readers]

We have covered quite a lot of collaboration tools (MangoApps, HoneyTask and several others), but Russia based Bitrix24 comes closes to being an all-in-one project management tool for SMEs.

The tool nicely mixes social networking (think Yammer) with task management (think Do) and tracking of projects (think Basecamp) and importantly, is totally free for 12 users (most of the other tools limit number of free users to 5).

Features offered by Bitrix includes:

  • Activity Stream
    Users can choose to keep informed about company activity through any combination of the activity stream and notifications via the internal messaging system or email. The internal messenger and email also handle invitations to workgroups or meetings and other system events.
  • Conversations
    Conversations enables the team to start collaboration on a task or a document. When starting a new conversation in the Activity Stream, you can also attach a document or an image.You can start a private conversation with one or many colleagues, adding additional participants at any time.

  • IM
    The internal messenger delivers system messages and instant messages, as well as allowing the sending of files from user to user. All messages are saved in a history and are indexed by the search function, and the most recent messages appear at the top of the list.
  • Project Management/Gantt Chart
    Tasks and subtasks can be viewed in a Gantt chart with status, responsible person, and chronological relationships. This gives a full picture of the progression of the project at a single glance, and helps identify potential or existing delays.
  • Extranet
    The Extranet provides a secure, separate space where workgroups can be shared with third parties such as clients, partners, and service providers.
  • Report Builder
    The report building lets you aggregate, filter, and sort report data and display them to management in the needed form.
  • CRM
    This is probably the most interesting feature, but the inbuilt CRM functionality that serves needs of a SME (unless you want a blown-up CRM functionality of salesforce).

While the feature set is super amazing and well though through, the product is slow to use (Pi team used it for a month) and maybe the Bitrix team should just take a MVP approach to build features. For instance, a notion of ‘group calendar is misssing’ (i.e. dashboard view for team leads/managers) and similarly, notifications need a proper placement (let’s learn from Facebook notification?).

Having said that, Bitrix has the potential to disrupt the social intranet space which has certainly got a major boost post Yammer acquisition by Microsoft.
