BSNL Plans To Set Up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots

BSNL is planning to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots across the country, to counter it’s lack in availability of adequate spectrum for 4G service. 500 hotspots have already been installed and 2500 more will be installed in this fiscal year.

BSNL CMD, Anupam Shrivastava, said, “We are at present neither a 4G service provider, nor do we have the relevant spectrum to launch this service. But to deal with this challenge, we are working on a scheme to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country, as it (Wi-Fi Hotspot) is faster than 4G services.”

BSNL will also be investing Rs 5,500 crore to set up 25,000 mobile towers and improve the call drops.

The public sector company has achieved a profit of Rs 672 crores in FY15 and plans to attain Rs 1000 crores by the end of the current fiscal year.
