The Indian government wants app developers to build citizen service mobile applications. And wants them bad. Earlier this month, the government announced an app development contest inviting developers to make apps under six categories.
Winners walk away with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and the submission deadline is March 31st.
The apps need to be built on top of C-DACs mobile service delivery gateway for Android (what about iOS)?
Applications will be reviewed and top apps will be hosted on the Governments Mobile Seva App store.
The categories of apps include: Government services, Educational/ Reference, Social Networking, Lifestyle/ Travel, Productivity Tools and eHealth. If you are a developer, see how to apply here.
This is a great start and the ecosystem approach is the right way to do things instead of trying to do everything in house. However, its funny to see how the government is tying itself up to the Android ecosystem so closely. What about citizen services for iOS users? What happens when people start using Firefox and Ubuntu operating systems?
