Online graphic art marketplace Crude Area has raised angel funding from a clutch of investors including Sidharth Rao and Sudesh Samaria, the founders of Webchutney and two angel investors from the US.
The company founded by Shweta Bhandari and Nidhi Dewan in November 2012, curates art and design from around the world to be sold to buyers. The funds will be used to hire more people and invest in marketing, the company said.
“We are now looking to scale across different home décor and lifestyle products in the next 2-3 months. As we scale, we expect to compete with other marketplaces in the home décor/lifestyle space,” said Bhandari.
On the marketplace, artists can showcase their work and connect with buyers who can order the artwork in different sizes.
“Our sales are growing almost 20 percent month on month. We are near break even already. But we are now are going to invest in marketing,” Dewan told NextBigWhat.
The startup is one of the new generation of art and design companies trying to make art more accessible to buyers. On those lines, PixMyWall is an interesting take. The startup lets you rent fine art. Another Bangalore based starutp which works on similar lines is The Art Renter, a venture started by Gallery Time and Space and art lovers Narayan Gopalan and P D Ganapathy. The company works with corporates, galleries and artists and individuals.
