Low cost tablet maker Datawind has entered the smartphone market with a new 5 inch touch screen dual- sim phone costing less than Rs 5,000. The company said that the new PocketSurfer5 range will use Datawind’s web delivery platform to deliver web content faster.
Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind said in a statement
Intended to again create benchmarks in the smart phone category, DataWind’s new products break the affordability barriers of smartphones and bandwidth constraints of cellular networks to deliver calling facility and internet access to anybody who can afford a simple mobile phone. Currently simple phones in the market cost as much as the smart phone on offer by DataWind.
One can’t question the nobility of the company’s intention (bridging digital divide and such) but if the company’s previous track record is to be reckoned with, Datawind clearly has an image problem to deal with. Affordability is not the only factor we consider when buying a phone. We like it if it works as well!
