Diabeto – A Smarter Way To Keep A Check On Diabetes

Diabeto is a device that wirelessly transmits blood glucose readings from a glucometer to a smartphone, where it can be logged and analysed via an app.

Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO), but doesn’t yet have a cure. Patients diagnosed with the condition have to manage their Diabetes effectively, but this requires logging and tracking blood glucose levels over a period of time.
Diabeto is a device that wirelessly transmits blood-glucose readings from a glucometer to a smartphone. Patients can then track their Diabetes on their smartphones via intuitive and easy to understand graphs. The application tracks parameters such as mood, medication [insulin intake], physical activity as well as carbohydrate intake.
The entire system is cloud based and the readings are securely stored and can be accessed by a physician for their expert opinion.
The device is currently compatible with 19 glucometers commonly available in the global market, and has been designed to be uncomplicated and unintrusive. The makers of Diabeto claim it’s easy enough for visually impaired, hearing impaired, children and senior citizens to use.
It has taken Diabeto three years to reach the Alpha testing stage with $40,000 equity free grant from Startup Chile program and $30,000 from an angel investor. However, in order to mass produce the device, the team is looking to raise another $10,000 via an Indiegogo campaign which went live on January 20, 2015.
In just three days the company has managed to raise $11,311 in funding, with an additional 42 days left until the close of the campaign. Diabeto will cost $59 when it does go on sale, but the company is offering the first 100 devices at a cost of $49.
