Soon you will be able to send a direct message to anyone on Twitter, even if they aren’t following you. According to a report on The Verge, Twitter has already started rolling out the feature over the week.
“If you check this option, any Twitter user that follows you will be able to send you a DM, regardless of whether you decide to follow them back,”it says on Twitter.
Until now, a person you want to send a direct message to would have to follow you on Twitter also, if someone wants to send you a DM, you’d have to be following them. The update hasn’t been announced on the Twitter blog yet. Earlier today, personal technology columnist Amit Agarwal had Tweeted about this. The feature isn’t live for us yet.
The obvious concern is that it will lead to a lot more spam, which we must assume is a problem Twitter has solved. The company is gearing up for an IPO and can’t really afford large scale flight of users at this time. Twitter, with over 200 mn users, had filed for a confidential IPO which analysts estimate to be worth over $15 bn.
