271 Million Domain Names Made the Internet in 2013

There were 271 Million domain names registered in 2013 globally. The growth in domain name registration has risen 7.3% year on year says Verisign.

For the over 2.5 billion internet users worldwide, over 5 million new domain names were added to the internet in the fourth quarter of 2013. This brings the total number of registered domain names globally to 271 Million. The growth in domain name registration has risen 7.3% year on year reported Verisign.

The increase in .com and .net registrations were marginal as compared to 2012. It grew to 8.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2013, as opposed to 8 million in 2012.

The TLD or top level domain names for .com and .net saw a 5% increase year on year, and was at a total of 127.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. 112 million names were in the .com domain, while .net was at 15.2 million.

The largest TLD by zone was taken by .com, followed by .tk and .de. Of the 230.6 quintillion .com domain names available for registration, only 8.6 million have been registered as of December 2013.

Country code top level domain names or ccTLDs saw a 3.3% increase in fourth quarter of 2013, as compared to the third quarter. China and Tokelau saw a 4% increase QoQ growth for four straight quarters. China also has the highest number of internet users in the world with 618 million of its population using the internet.
