Doordarshan, India’s public broadcaster was launched with an experimental telecast with 180 Philips TV sets donated by UNESCO to the Indian government on Sep 15, 1959.

Initially, the channel began with an hour-long daily telecast from a studio in Delhi but started regular telecasts only in the 1970s. Pramita Puri was the first announcer who started the programme with “shehnai recital” of Ustaad Bismillah Khan. Krishi Darshan was the first program telecast on Doordarshan. It commenced on 26 January 1967 and is one of the longest running programs on Indian television.
