Eat This! Global Data Consumption Isn’t Being Driven By First Time Smartphone Users

Smartphones are quickly becoming universal and are seen as the key driver of Internet adoption, but growth in data consumption isn’t being driven by majority of first-time users.

According to Amdocs 2015 State of the RAN report, 10% of mobile users (the Technoratis) are consuming 80% of the world’s mobile data traffic. Further, these users aren’t bound by to a single connected device, but often sport smartphones, tablets and other devices.
The numbers aren’t merely indicative of a split between users in wealthy and poor countries, with data consumption peaking in most major cities across the world. Considering that average user data consumption grew by 100% between 2013 and 2014, data growth for these Technoratis was even more amplified.

Amdocs found that there isn’t just a demographic split in data consumption, but also a geographic one. The report suggests 20% of service areas in major cities worldwide with high smartphone saturation generate 80% of network traffic.
Further, Indoor mobile data traffic is growing 20% faster than outdoor traffic, indicating that subscribers are primarily using mobile data services at their desks, on their sofas, and standing at sports and concert venues, and at transport hubs such as airports and train stations. This could also mean that a large portion of data is being used via Wi-Fi and isn’t even hitting cellular networks.
