‘Niche ecommerce players have 5-6 clones but transacting customer base is not growing’

Kunal Shah, the CEO & Founder of Freecharge, has a great vantage to watch the consumer Internet space in India. His site enables people to recharge their mobile phones and subscriptions. It tells him how many people are transacting online. We caught up with him at the sidelines of our Startup Roots event in April to understand how he sees the consumer Internet space. In this interview, he talks about how survival instinct drives innovation and the consumer Internet space in India. “People are realizing that we need to make India focused apps. But the e-commerce industry is going through a rough patch. While unit economics is a separate issue, number of online buyers haven’t grown as much as the industry would like it to,” he says.
