This deal would give the eCommerce players a huge boost with their delivery services and India Post has around 1.5 lakh postal offices across the country and covers a wide geography. The service by India Post will also include Cash on Delivery facility which is an important factor in India’s eCommerce business.
This deal with eCommerce players and the government operated India Post could be a part of the many initiatives of the Digital India programme that NaMo has introduced, which had specific focus on developing eCommerce in rural areas of the country by developing warehouses and delivery facilities with a public-private partnership.
Snapdeal’s earlier tie up with India post was to offer exclusive collection of India Post Stamps collection through the online marketplace. Amazon too had pilot tested delivery through India post last year with CoD being the major part of the pilot test. With DHL planning to start off with its delivery services in APAC region with India being the pilot grounds, government had pitched India Post as a partner to this.
