Technology vendors in India have reasons to celebrate. Poll promises made by parties will see to it that the demand for laptops, smartphones and tablets stay up this year. To fulfill their promises, BJP, the winning party will have to buy up thousands of laptops, smartphones and personal computers. It will also have to take up some key technology projects.
First, some background. Elections to four Indian state legislatures have just been concluded. The Bharatiya Janata Party won in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh and became the single largest party in national capital Delhi. The possibility of a BJP led government in Delhi are strong and in other states, it has a clear majority to form a government. Here are some tech projects to look forward to, if the BJP forms the government in Delhi.
Look to promote e-governance, all tenders to be made online and process of awarding big tenders to be video recorded.
Time Bound improvements in the system of justice, its administration and infrastructure
shall be brought with the use of information technology.
Process of acquisition and distribution of food grains through be computerised and made available on the internet.
To make Delhi solar energy capital of India by generation of solar power on the roof tops of buildings.
Common smart card for metro-rail, metro feeder and DTC buses. Concessions for students.
Setting up of IT zones in Nazafgarh, Narela and Bijwasan.
Revenue department to be computerised.
Technology sharing with rural youth to promote agriculture.

Free Laptops & Tablets in Chhattisgarh
The BJP, which won 49 seats in Chhattisgarh to form a majority has promised free laptops to first year students. Earlier, final year students were given free laptops and tablets. Engineering and medical students will get laptops and science and arts students will get tablets. The BJP has also promised to set up an Information Technology Hub in the state.
Free Smartphones in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP trounced the congress, winning 165 seats out of 230, free smart phones have been promised to all government college students. It has also promised to give free laptops to meritorious students.
In Rajasthan, the BJP has promised to review the free laptop scheme.
All this means more tech spending from the various state governments. A record total of 3.53 million personal computers were shipped in the second quarter of this year as governments in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu bought up nearly a third of the total number of personal computers sold in the country.
