Engineering students who are opting for distance education now have a reason to cheer. In a first, the Government has launched a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) which will give access to education material sourced from the IITs and IISc.
The courses will let students use video, text material, problem sets in an interactive platform. The move is aimed at equipping students with IT industry ready and job-ready courses said the report in the Business Standard.
The online courses begin on March 3, 2014. The programmes are 10 weeks long each.
The courses will be followed by an exam akin to the GATE across the country. The exam will have to be done by candidates in person. Upon completion, students will be awarded a course completion certificate and the scorecard of the course completed.

The first MOOCs will be launched by IIT Bombay in partnership with MOOC platform, EDx, in July 2014.
