Era of Paid Voice Calls Ends: Mukesh Ambani

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani today changed the history of telecom in India, by ending the era of paying for voice calls and SMS.

During an hour-long speech at the RIL’s 42th Annual General Meeting, the billionaire industrialist said, “Customers should pay for only one service, voice or data not both…. Worldwide operators charge only for data, and voice and messages are free… All voice calls for Jio customer will be absolutely free… The era of paying for voice calls is ending. Jio will usher India into the new era.”

Yes, the company will not be charging for voice calls at all, and it will charge a fraction of what its competitors are charging for 4G data. Jio will charge only 5 paise per MB, or Rs 50 per GB, and the greater the data usage, the lower the price you have to pay.

The small plan starts at Rs 149 for 0.3GB data. The Medium pack comes at Rs 499 for 4GB 4G data and access to unlimited 4G at night. The Large, XL, XXL and XXXL 4G packs are priced at Rs 999, Rs 1,499, Rs 2,499, Rs 3,999 and Rs 4,999, respectively.

Jio is free for all till December 31, 2016 after which users will be able to choose their tariff plan.
