The number of fake and duplicate accounts is higher in developing markets such as India and Turkey as compared to developed markets such as United States or the United Kingdom, social networking giant Facebook has said.
During the nine months ended September 30, 2013, for example, we estimate user-misclassified accounts may have represented between approximately 0.8% and 2.1% of our worldwide Monthly Active Users and undesirable accounts may have represented between approximately 0.4% and 1.2% of our worldwide MAU, the company said.
The company which reported a net profit of $ 424 mn up 27% from the previous quarter, said that it has 728 million daily active users out of which 189 mn were from Asia. The company said it had 1.19 bn montly active users worldwide out of which 351 million were from Asia.
More than half, or 507 million DAUs accessed the site from a mobile device. For the quarter ended September 30, 874 mn MAUs accessed the site on mobile.
Facebook earned $ 2.01 bn for in the quarter out of which payments and other fees constituted $218 mn. Asia contributed to $278 mn in revenues for Facebook while it earned $962 mn from US & Canada.
