Facebook has introduced Live, a way for celebrities and other verified persons to interact with their fans via live-streaming of video. Live is being rolled out as a feature of Facebook’s celebrity-only Mentions app.
The live broadcasts will be accessible to fans via their news feeds where they can like, share and comment on the live stream. Comments will be overlaid in real-time onto the stream itself, while the streams will also be available for viewing post broadcast.
With Periscope and Meerkat becoming popular methods for celebrities to interact with fans, Facebook believes it has the edge with celebrities already having massive fan followings on its social networking platform.
Also, unlike the two other live streaming platforms, the videos won’t go away once the broadcast is over, instead they’ll be available for viewing on the celebrities timeline. Moreover, Facebook has made a few tweaks to its News Feed algorithm to make sure you see live streams immediately.
The News Feed isn’t live but with live streams Facebook will notify users when a friend is watching a stream or a celebrity they follow is hosting a stream. Further, broadcasts will show up immediately on a user’s News Feed unlike other posts.
