Facebook’s Messenger service now has over 700 million monthly active users, up from 600 million monthly users in March 2015. Messenger is fast catching WhatsApp, the company’s $22bn acquisition, which had over 800 million monthly active users in March.
The company has been ramping up efforts to spin off Messenger as a platform with its core being an instant messaging client. Developers can create apps which run inside Messenger itself, ranging from small multiplayer games to whole payment gateways themselves.
Apart from hitting 700 million active users mark, Facebook Messenger has been downloaded over a billion times on the Play Store. Facebook is the only company other than Google to have apps that have been downloaded that many times on the Android app store.
