Facebook Messenger users on Android can now have the best of both worlds. The social networking giant has introduced a free voice calling feature for Android phone users in India.
All Android phone users with Facebook messenger can now make calls to others using the ‘’free call’’ option. The calls are made over the users data services/WiFi and functions similar to that of messaging and call app ‘Viber’.
The free calling feature was first introduced in Canada and USA in 2013. The new feature will definitely be a boost to Facebook’s messaging service simply because it allows users to call Facebook contacts, and not just your phone contacts.
There has been no official comment from Facebook on when the feature had been rolled out. Reports suggest it was some time last week (via).
WhatsApp Voice Calling
Facebook had acquired WhatsApp for $19 bn in February 2014. Speculations on WhatsApp introducing a free voice calling feature have been rife both before and post the acquisition. Reports have suggested that WhatsApp may yet introduce the feature in the second quarter of 2014.
