Facebook is a trove of nostalgia inducing memories, and the social network has now launched a feature called “On This Day” that pulls up posts on the current date from previous years.
The feature will be rolling out globally over the next few days, though it wasn’t yet accessible for any of us at the NextBigWhat team just yet.
The roll-out of On This Day seems to have been inspired by the success of Timehop – an app which can pull up past memories from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr, Dropbox, iPhoto or your camera roll – which has 6 million daily users.
While Facebook declined to cite Timehop as an inspiration, unlike the app, the On This Day feature only pulls up information from from a user’s Facebook profile.
The company doesn’t have any plans of using the new feature to drive revenues, but is instead relying on it to drive engagement as people reshare the posts.
