Facebook’s scorching growth in India seems to have hit the ceiling. The social networking company said its user base has sequentially grown 5% in the April- June quarter to 82 mn. Contrast this with the 50% annual growth it reported in India in the previous quarter.
The social network had 78 million users in India at the end of the first quarter of 2013. This was a 50% year over year growth.
For Facebook, the shift to Mobile is already pronounced in countries like India. Nearly 62 mn use Facebook on a mobile device, Kevin D’souza, COuntry Growth Manager, Facebook India told reporters (Source). In other words, 75% of Facebooks users in India were mobile users!
Worldwide, Facebook said it has 699 million daily active users on average during June 2013.
In its quarterly earnings report, Facebook said
We experienced growth in DAUs across major markets including Brazil, India, and the United States…Users in India and Brazil represented key sources of growth in the second quarter of 2013 relative to the prior year.
Facebooks mobile push seems to be paying off. Worldwide, daily active users who used mobile to access Facebook was at 469 mn during June 2013.
Worldwide mobile MAUs increased 51% to 819 mn as of June 30, 2013 from 543 million as of June 30, 2012. In all regions, an increasing number of our MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices, with users in India, Brazil, and Indonesia representing key sources of mobile growth over the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2013.
For the company, which grew 53% yoy in the quarter to $1.81 bn in revenues, Asia is still the lowest paying market. Its revenues from advertisements in Asia was at $225 mn and paymets was $22 mn for the quarter as opposed to $721 mn from ads and $127 mn from payments in US & Canada.
The United States and Canada are mature markets for advertisement and payments.
