Fake Call Centres Bust in Mumbai Unearths Rs 500 Crore Scam

Workers at fake call centers in Mira Road in Mumbai have reportedly robbed US citizens of Rs 500 crore by pretending to be officials of US Tax Department, which is equivalent to the Income Tax Department in India.

Mumbai Police has detained over 500-600 employees of some call centres, who were passing 30% of their profits on to their US collaborators. According to the police, the owners of these companies, who are based in the US, would pass on stolen US citizen details to these call centres, who would then call clients demanding for financial and bank details, failing which they would threaten them with dire consequences, including legal action. Over Rs 1 crore was stolen daily, say the police.
