Flipkart Appoints Former Google Researcher To Head Image Sciences

Krishnendu Chaudhury will head the development of tech used for object recognition in images at Flipkart. The tech will allow customers to search for products visually and sellers to upload their inventor with just one picture. Prior to joining Flipkart, Krishnendu worked at Google for 10 years, leding the team that created Google Newspaper Search as well as WebP.

Flipkart has announced the appointment of Krishnendu Chaudhury as its Head of Image Sciences. Prior to joining flipkart, Krishnendu was a part of the Machine Intelligence team at Google Research.

Krishnendu’s core focus at Flipkart will be to develop Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Networks for object recognition in images. He will lead the development of computer vision and image processing technologies at the company.

“From customers searching for products ‘visually’ to our sellers uploading their inventory on our platform through one picture, it is all possible today with ‘computer vision’ or deep learning technology,” said Peeyush Ranjan, Flipkart’s Head of Engineering.

In his 10 years at Google, Krishnendu led the team that created Google Newspaper Search as well as WebP, Google’s open source still image compression technology. Prior to that, he worked at the Advanced Technology Group of Adobe Systems for about 9 years.


Flipkart recently gave users a glimpse of how image recognition technologies will work in e-commerce with the launch of “image search” for fashion products on its platform.
