Indian online retailer #flipkart which recently announced its major foray into e-books has partnered with California based Smashwords, a self publishing and distribution platform for e-books. Smashwords titles will begin appearing on Flipkart in the next three to four weeks.
Smashwords founder Mark Coker said in a blogpost
I’ve been eager to distribute Smashwords books to India for several years now. India represents the fifth largest source of traffic to the Smashwords store after the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
The ebook market is nascent in India, accounting for less than one percent of the market, wrote Coker. ” I expect the market to grow dramatically over the next five years as the primordial soup necessary to support a thriving ebook ecosystem comes into place,” he added.
Smashwords authors and publishers will be automatically opted in to Flipkart distribution. The company plans to ship titles and metadata updates to Flipkart five days a week, just like it does for Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.
How much does an author earn? 60% of the list price for all Flipkart sales after tax!
Flipkart forayed into eBooks with proprietary format in November last year. Earlier this month, the online retailer launched its e-book app on three new platforms and said that it has plans to get into self publishing.
