Microsoft wants to catch you young – distributes developer products for free

Microsoft, in an attempt to catch ‘impressionable minds’ has launched dreamsparkindia, an initiative launched by Bill Gates during his India visit.

MS is giving away free developer tools like Windows Server, Microsoft Visual Studio, Expression Studio, Virtual PC etc. to students and the same is available online and through DVDs from Microsoft’s program partners such as NIIT, Aptech and Hughes Net Fusion Centers.

While MS wants students to embrace their developer tools, open source products (LAMP) are becoming a big threat (has seen major adoption in the recent times)

Aside, do you think MS should also go easy on Office suite pricing? Especially for academic institutions?

Google is getting aggressive on app distribution and while it’s BD/Sales team is unable to crack the academic bureaucratic nut, they have roped in students with App-titude challenge.

As far as I know, most of the IIMs have moved to Google Apps and a penny lost now is a $ loss later.

What’s your take?
