Free wi-fi on trains is finally here. To begin with, the service will be available on the Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani express and then extended to a selected number of trains across the country.
The service was inagurated by railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in Delhin on Tuesday will be free until the railway ministry figures out how much to charge passengers for it. By the end of the financial year, Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains will have the service along with Wi-Fi, 1G, 3G and GPS.
The wi-fi service, which came at a cost of Rs 6.3 cr to the railways, is being provided using a satellite communication link at a speed of 4mbps download and 512kbps upload speed.
According to a government statement
The satellite antenna is placed in one of the two Power Cars of the rake. This is linked through Wi-Fi radios provided outside of each coach. This is further distributed inside the coaches through indoor access point. This will help passengers of the Rajdhani Express train to access internet during their journey.
Passengers will be able to register for the facility using their PNR number and other details like mobile number. A login ID and password will be issued for the course of the journey after the credentials are verified.
