Furlenco founder Ajith Karimpana, who moved back to India after working for Goldman Sachs in the US found the Indian furniture industry to be highly disorganized.
He realized that relocation along with shifting homes can be an unnerving activity and tends to create a lot of frustration for most people. Looking out for a new piece of furniture and disposing of the old stuff can be a tricky affair, especially when the ‘fair value’ is almost never guaranteed. That’s when Ajith realized that Renting furniture could turn the entire process from being painful to pleasurable.
In 2012 when Ajith was starting ‘RentUrDuniya’ (now known as Furlenco), everyone advised him against it. They said, ” Indians are known to take pride in ownership, and there is no market for furniture renting.”
Ajith took a leap of faith and explored the uncertain waters of Indian shared economy. The gamble seemed to be worked out well for Furlenco so far as they have shipped more than $20 million worth of furniture to date to 15,000 homes, making them India’s largest online furniture rental company.
This UnPluggd, Ajith would be sharing his insights on the exhilarating journey of creating a new market category and lessons learned!
