Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google has launched a program to reward the best innovation in local governance by Gram Panchayats in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
The Google.org Gram Panchayat Puraskar recognizes that innovations in governance are happening every day in villages across India. We want to publicly recognize good ideas and create incentives for further innovation in local governance throughout the country. And we hope that this contest helps gram panchayats celebrate successes, share ideas with one another, and improve the quality of public services in villages. – details [official blog]
Google is also promoting the contest via print media (vernacular newspapers)
Earlier, Google.org along with Soros foundation and Omidyar Network announced $17mn Small to Medium Enterprise Investment Company for India that aims to bridge the gap between microloans offered by microfinance institutions and the larger investments of commercial banks and private equity funders.
