Google on Friday extended its live traffic update feature to six more Indian cities taking the total number of cities in which it offers the service to 12.

Panaji, Vadodara, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and suburbs are the new cities covered by Google live traffic.

The announcement was made by Google on its  official Google Plus page and was reported by AndroidOS.in.

The extension of Google’s live traffic is a part of an expansion of its coverage in 11 countries such as India, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and the United States.

Live traffic feature was also introduced in United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan for the very first time.

In first phase, Google had launched maps navigation service in India as well as live traffic information in the map service for six  cities namely Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.

Google Maps Navigation is free and accessible to any smartphone user running Android 2.2 or later, and live traffic information is visible on both the mobile and desktop versions of Google Maps. Important to note that the app uses GPS which is a drain on the battery, so make sure that you carry your mobile charger.

Live traffic information from Google Maps is crowd-sourced from Android phone users traveling on a given route, third party sources and government agencies (traffic departments). Through live traffic update, Google would be able to update commuters about average speed of vehicles and this could be gauged through the speed of commuters using  android phone.
