Google may have just completed an experiment that can be ideally achieved only through a quantum computer, thus achieving ‘Quantum Supremacy’. This was revealed in a Google research paper which was initially published on NASA’s website before being pulled down.
Google’s quantum computer, Sycamore, was able to solve a calculation in 3 minutes and 20 seconds while the current fastest supercomputer, Summit, would take 10,000 years to solve the equation and practically impossible for traditional computers.
While it will still take time for quantum computers to serve practical purposes, once developed these can create a huge impact in diverse areas like cryptography, chemistry, artificial intelligence, machine learning and more.
