Government lifts 20 message/day SMS ban: Report

The ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes withdrawn with immediate effect the home ministry has said, according to a press trust of India report.


A recent government order had placed a five20 messages per day limit on mobile subscribers. Earlier this month, the government had banned bulk messages stating that they were being misused to spread rumors and panic in the country. Text messages and social media played a crucial role in spreading images and threats which led to an exodus of people from north east region of the country last month.

Several internet pages, Facebook and Twitter accounts  were blocked by the government to stop the rumors from spreading. Sloppy execution of blockages led to public outrage against the government.
