Govt shelves PIB fact-check plan amid protests from editors and publishers

  • The IT ministry postponed its plans that require social media companies and other platforms to remove content that has been flagged as “fake or false” by the Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit.
  • The Editors Guild of India, the Indian Newspaper Society, and the News Broadcasters & Digital Association all voiced opposition to the decision, claiming that it would grant the PIB broad authority.
