Helion Ventures Invests $3.3 million in Brand Calculus, Quick Service Restaurant Brands

Helion Ventures has invested $3.3milion in Brand Calculus, Bangalore based startup that helps International brands (specifically quick service restaurants) start operation in India.

Brand Calculus is looking at three sectors – fashion (centered around apparel and footwear), food and services (geared to healthcare and Wellness and is the master franchisee for Booster Juice in India.

The company has been started by Fazle Naqvi, who co-founded Indus-League and was involved with the early days of Madura Garments.

A Look at Franchise Market in India

The Indian Franchise Market is expected to reach $20 billion by 2013, as per a report by FICCI-CIFTI.

  • 30% of newly opened food outlets are actually via franchise route.
  • As of now, there are 1,200 franchisors in India (150 in food and retail).
  • Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) boasts of having 70% brands (of total 408 brand franchisors), while Western India has 386 brands and the Southern India falls next with 250 brands and Eastern region with 58 brands.

This is Helion’ Ventures’ second investment in retail space – earlier one being beauty chain, You Look Great (YLG) and some of their offline business investment includes Getit Yellow Pages, HummingBird

Helion Ventures has been able to maintain a healthy mix in their investment – right from technology intensive to retail.
