Hike messenger has introduced a new feature called ‘Hike Calls’ which will allow the service’s users to call each other for free over 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi. The announcement comes within a month of the company’s acquisition of free calling app Zip Phone, and will be rolled out across 200 countries.

The feature has been launched in beta on Android, which makes up over 90% of Hike’s user base. Versions of Hike messenger with free calling capabilities for iOS and Windows Phone are slated to be launched by the end of this quarter. The company claims Hike Calls have been optimized to consume very little data, giving users more calling minutes per MB of data used.
We certainly hope Airtel isn’t making any exclusive exclusions in the case of Hike Calls, given the anti net-neutrality stand the company has taken over VoIP calls. Hike’s chief rival WhatsApp too is working on a voice-calling feature which we could get to see soon.
