Cyber attacks targeted at Indian organisations largely originate from Pakistan, China, US and Bangladesh according to Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has reported 2,73,624 cyber security related incidents between 2012 and 2015 (up to May) and the trend is on the rise.
In 2012, there were 22,060 cyber attacks on Indian networks, 71,780 attacks in 2014, 1,30,338 attacks in 2014 and in the first 5 months of 2015 there have already been 49,504 attacks.
Ravi Shankar Prasad in his address to the parliament said that the trend in increasing cyber attacks is similar to that witnessed worldwide.
Despite hackers using masquerading techniques and hidden servers, cyber threats are known to originate from the US, Europe, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Brazil, Turkey, Iran, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and the UAE.
The minister reported that a total of 32,323 and 9,057 websites were hacked during 2014 and 2015 (up to May) respectively.
