India issues the world’s first facial biometric ID cards for seafarers

India became the first country to issue Biometrics-enabled smarty ID cards. The facial biometric seafarer identity document or BSID which is based on facial biometric technology will be issued to around 3.5 lakh seafarers in the next two years.

This Aadhar based ID system will have a chip carrying the biometric and demographic details of the owner and can be read by any normal point of sale (PoS) or ATM reader machine.

Since the national database and related information will be internationally accessible for immigration officers, it will give Indian seafarers a robust ID proof while travelling.

Will this also pave the way to similar Aadhar-based ID cards for the citizens?
