India plans to move on from lithium-ion batteries

The Union Government has planned to explore alternatives to lithium storage battery under India’s energy security plan. Metal hydride, sodium air, zinc-air and nickel-zinc provide an alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

This step has been taken after Chinese firms have secured lithium mining rights in Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. It will reduce dependency on imported batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones and solar panels from China.

India has also established a National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage to cope up with the evolving needs of energy globally.
