Indian Government Directs ISPs To Block 857 Porn Website

Over the weekend several reports of ISPs blocking certain porn websites emerged, but now it has been learnt that they’re acting on the directives of the Indian government.

Blocked

The government sent a notice to all ISPs instructing them to block 857 porn websites in India on late Friday. Several ISPs have already begun the blocking process over the weekend.

However, some leading Internet companies in India have said that they aren’t fully compliant with the government order until it comes up with clearer definitions of what can be blocked and what cannot, according to an ET report.

Last November the government had asked the Internet and Mobile Association of India to prepare a list of porn websites that can be blocked. The move was triggered by a hearing in the Supreme Court that is seeking to ban porn as it leads to “activities like rape, harassment, molestations of women”.

Given the seriousness of the issue, the court did say it will look into the issue of banning revenge porn, however, it did not pass any order that could lead to the banning of porn websites in India.

Moreover, Chief Justice HL Dattu has said that a ban on watching porn can violate an individual’s Right to Personal Liberty if it is being done within the confines of their home.

“Somebody may come to the court and say look I am above 18 and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room. It is a violation of Article 21,” said Chief Justice HL Dattu, according to a Hindu report.
